Habitat for Humanity homeownership provides secure affordable housing to low-income individuals who have been living in substandard rental units. Habitat for Humanity believes homeownership is a vital step in creating self-esteem in both families and neighborhoods, and is the most basic way to break successive generations of poverty.

Habitat for Humanity is an equal opportunity program. Families are selected based on their level of need, willingness to partner and accept responsibility, and their ability to pay the mortgage. Individuals from all races, sexes, and creeds are encouraged to apply.

To qualify for a home you must:

  1. Not currently have adequate housing (substandard, seasonal, etc.)
  2. Have lived on island for over one year;
  3. Be a first-time homebuyer with a minimum family size of 3;
  4. Be willing to partner with Habitat by building your home with us for at least 350 hours of "sweat equity";
  5. Have a minimum gross income of at least $50,500 per year and a maximum gross income of $80,800 per year which is 50% and 80% of the Nantucket Medium income, respectively;  (These income limits are for a family of 5.  See table below for other family size/income relationships.)*
  6. Have a good credit, no felony convictions and no more than one conviction for a misdemeanor;

Application Process

All information is considered confidential and is used only for our selection process.

The Family Selection Committee will process all applications and make a final recommendation to the Habitat for Humanity Nantucket Board of Directors. The Board will make the final choice. The entire selection process can take between two and three months. Applicants not chosen may re-apply in the future.  Click here for a copy of the application.
