The houses Habitat builds are affordable for the selected families largely because much of the labor is done by volunteers from the community. Volunteering for Habitat can take many forms and is available to people with a great variety of skills. Skilled professionals in the building trades (carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, etc.) are always in great demand. Other jobs, such as painting and shingling, can be done by most people who have only limited experience with using basic hand tools. Those who would like to contribute some of their time but would rather not work with tools are welcome to help with clean-up jobs or making lunch for the on-site work crew.
When there is a Habitat house under construction, volunteers will most likely work only on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or for some part of that time. Persons 16 years of age and under are not permitted to work; those between ages 17 and 18 are required to bring a signed permission form from a parent or guardian to the job site supervisor. All volunteers, regardless of age, have to sign a waiver of liability the first time they come to work on the construction site. (click here for permission and waiver forms).
Due to the problems of housing on Nantucket, we can only accommodate volunteers who have on-island housing. Also, because we normally do construction work only on Saturdays and because volunteers can be deployed only during certain phases of construction, it is unrealistic to plan on doing sustained community service work with Habitat over a short time period.
Volunteers should call 508-325-8912 or e-mail us at habitatnantucket@nantucket.net. Leave us a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN HABITAT FOR HUMANITY NANTUCKET!
